What is the estimate for Tutankhamun?

We estimate about $25 billion in resources over nine years. The burial goods alone show how much value moved through the palace.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

The tomb contained a gold mask weighing about 10 kilograms, gilded shrines, chariots, jewellery and textiles. That is believed to be modest compared with the burials of major pharaohs, which were robbed in antiquity.

State revenue during his reign came from Nile agriculture, Nubian gold and the restored temple estates.

How we estimate it

We use the value of the tomb contents in gold and materials as a floor, then add an estimated annual state revenue for the nine-year reign. Because the reign was short, the burial is a relatively large share of the total.

The comparison with Ramesses II shows the difference between a full imperial reign and a brief one.
