What is the estimate for Khufu?

We estimate the resources he commanded at about $65 billion across a reign of roughly 23 years, with the pyramid as the single largest item.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

Old Kingdom wealth came from the Nile flood, which determined the grain surplus, and from state control of labour, copper and stone. The Wadi al-Jarf papyri, found in 2013, record food shipments for the pyramid workforce.

Long-distance trade brought cedar from Lebanon, which appears in the same records.

How we estimate it

Estimates of the workforce range from 20,000 to 30,000, fed and housed for two decades. Adding the material, transport and administrative cost gives the largest single component of the figure.

The rest is an estimate of agricultural surplus available to the crown, which is far less certain.
