What is the estimate for Ramesses II?

Our reconstruction puts the resources Ramesses II commanded across his reign at roughly $120 billion in today’s money. The number reflects the total flow of gold, grain and tribute through the Egyptian state while he ruled, not a personal bank balance.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

Egypt under Ramesses II drew gold from mines in the Eastern Desert and Nubia, grain from the Nile flood, and tribute from Canaan and Libya. The state monopolised long-distance trade and controlled the temples that stored much of the surplus.

The peace treaty with the Hittites after the battle of Kadesh, around 1259 BC, stabilised the northern frontier and protected that income for the rest of his reign.

How we estimate it

We combine three inputs: the documented scale of Nubian gold production, the agricultural surplus estimated from Nile records and settlement archaeology, and the cost of the building programme measured in labour and material. Multiplying a plausible annual revenue by 66 years gives the order of magnitude above.

The margin of error is very wide. A factor of three in either direction is entirely possible, which is why we publish the figure with a historical attribution rather than as a net worth number.
