What is the estimate for Amenhotep III?

Our reconstruction puts his controlled resources at around $85 billion over 38 years, with unusually low military spending for the period.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

With no major wars, revenue went into construction rather than campaigns. Gold from Nubia, grain from the Nile and trade through the Mediterranean and Red Sea routes filled the treasury.

The Amarna letters contain direct evidence of the demand: Babylonian and Mitanni kings ask repeatedly for gold, noting that gold in Egypt is ’as common as dust’.

How we estimate it

We take the agricultural and gold estimates used for the New Kingdom and apply them to a reign with low military expenditure. Construction at Malkata and the Luxor colonnade gives an independent check on how much surplus was available.

The absence of war inflates the figure relative to warrior pharaohs, which is why it sits below Ramesses II despite shorter reign and a smaller empire.
