What is the estimate for Ramesses III?
We reconstruct about $55 billion in resources over 31 years, based partly on the temple donations the papyrus records.
This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.
Sources of wealth
The Harris Papyrus lists donations including more than 100,000 workers, hundreds of thousands of cattle, and large quantities of gold, silver and grain handed to the temples.
Those donations are only a fraction of state income, which came from agriculture, Nubian gold and trade.
How we estimate it
We use the papyrus as a floor for what the crown could dispose of, then estimate the remaining revenue from agriculture and trade. The surviving records from this period are unusually good because the state needed to document temple property.
Later in the reign, strikes and falling grain deliveries show the treasury tightening, which caps the estimate.
