What is the estimate for Thutmose III?

We reconstruct about $95 billion in controlled resources across his 54-year reign. The estimate leans on the Karnak Annals, the closest thing the ancient world offers to a tax return.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

Tribute from Canaan, Phoenicia and Syria arrived as gold, silver, horses, cattle and labour. Nubia supplied gold directly, and the Egyptian state took a share of every shipment that passed through its forts.

Domestic income came from grain land along the Nile, which the temples and the crown taxed in kind.

How we estimate it

The Annals give quantities of goods per campaign. Converting those into modern values requires assumptions about ancient prices, which we keep conservative. We then add an estimated agricultural surplus for 54 years.

Because the record covers only part of the income, the figure should be read as a floor rather than a precise total.
