What is the estimate for Akhenaten?

We estimate about $40 billion in controlled resources across roughly 17 years, with a large share spent on the new capital.

This is a historical estimate, not a market valuation. No pharaoh published accounts, and nothing comparable to a modern balance sheet survives. The figure in this profile is an order-of-magnitude reconstruction of the resources a ruler controlled during his reign, expressed in today’s dollars. Treat it as an illustration of scale, not as a measured fortune.

Sources of wealth

Confiscated temple estates and their revenue came under royal control. The Amarna letters show that gold was still flowing out as diplomatic gifts, but Egyptian garrisons in Canaan were being neglected.

The new city itself was built from scratch on a site with no existing infrastructure.

How we estimate it

Construction at Amarna, estimated from excavated building volume, is the largest known item. To that we add an estimate of agricultural revenue at the levels recorded before the reign.

The loss of Levantine tribute after the Amarna period is why the figure is below his predecessors.
