What is Steve Ballmer’s net worth?

Forbes puts Steve Ballmer at $158 billion on 3 November 2026. He is the wealthiest person on this list who did not found the company behind his fortune, and the clearest example of how employee equity can compound over decades.

Two assets drive the number: Microsoft stock he has mostly kept, and the Los Angeles Clippers, whose value has multiplied since he bought the team.

How the fortune was built

Ballmer grew up near Detroit, studied mathematics and economics at Harvard, and worked briefly at Procter and Gamble, where he shared an office with Jeff Bezos. He dropped out of Stanford’s MBA programme in 1980 to join Microsoft as its first business manager, employee number thirty.

He ran several divisions, including the operating systems business during the rise of Windows, and became president in 1998. In 2000 he replaced Bill Gates as chief executive, a role he held until 2014. His tenure is remembered for strong revenue growth in enterprise software and for missing the shift to mobile, a gap the company closed later under Satya Nadella.

In 2014 he paid $2 billion for the Los Angeles Clippers, then a record price for an NBA franchise. He funded the purchase largely by selling Microsoft shares, which in hindsight cost him more in appreciation than the team has gained, but the franchise itself is now valued several times higher.

Holdings and assets

Ballmer funded the Intuit Dome, the Clippers’ new arena in Inglewood, which opened in 2024. He also created USAFacts, a non-partisan data project that publishes government statistics in accessible form, and the Ballmer Group, which gives to economic mobility programmes.

He owns property in the Seattle area and a residence in Los Angeles. As with other profiles, only transactions with disclosed prices are counted.

How we estimate it

Microsoft shares are valued from the latest proxy statement and the closing price on our valuation date. The Clippers are valued using recent NBA franchise transactions applied to revenue multiples, then discounted for the lack of a ready market.
