What is Michael Dell’s net worth?

Forbes estimates Michael Dell’s fortune at $218.5 billion on 3 November 2026. It is one of the largest gains of the past two years, driven by the surge in demand for servers that run artificial intelligence workloads.

His position is unusual among technology founders because he holds both a very large operating stake and a mature family investment office. That combination means his wealth is less concentrated than that of a founder who never sold a share.

How the fortune was built

Dell enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin intending to study medicine. Instead he began assembling PCs from parts and selling them directly to buyers, cutting out retail margins. PC’s Limited was founded in 1984 with about $1,000 of capital, and by the end of the decade it was shipping overseas and selling through a catalogue that later became a website.

The company, renamed Dell, defined build-to-order manufacturing: customers chose a configuration, and machines were assembled close to the order. That kept inventory low and prices competitive. Dell led the business through its 1988 listing and its years as the world’s largest PC maker.

Frustrated with the public market, he bought the company back in 2013 in a $24.9 billion deal, then rebuilt it around enterprise hardware, software and services. It returned to public markets in 2018 through a complicated transaction involving VMware shares. He remains chief executive alongside chairman duties.

Holdings and assets

Dell's family office invests across public markets, credit and venture capital, and the family owns real estate in Austin and elsewhere in Texas. He is also a well-known private investor in sports and entertainment assets, though stakes of that kind are valued conservatively here unless a purchase price has been disclosed.

Philanthropy runs through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, which has given away more than $2 billion to education and child welfare programmes in the United States, India and South Africa. Given money is not added back to the estimate; it has already left the balance sheet.

How we estimate it

The Dell Technologies component uses the last proxy filing and the closing share price on our valuation date. The family office is valued from public disclosures, which are limited, so we apply a conservative range and take the lower end.
