What was Amo Houghton’s net worth?
CelebrityNetWorth records Amo Houghton’s net worth at $475 million in a profile dated 3 November 2026, the figure given for his estate at his death in March 2020.
Forbes had estimated his fortune at about $420 million in the early 1990s, when he was among the richest members of Congress and still running the company.
Sources of wealth
The Houghton family founded Corning Glass Works in 1851, and Amo was the fifth generation to lead it. He joined in 1952 and became chairman and chief executive in the mid-1960s.
He pushed the company into research and optical fiber as demand for cookware and television glass weakened, a shift that later placed Corning at the center of telecommunications and display glass.
How the fortune was built
He served in the Marine Corps in 1945 and 1946, then took an undergraduate degree and an MBA at Harvard. He ran Corning through a hard decade for American manufacturing before leaving in 1986 to run for Congress.
He won an open upstate New York seat, was reelected eight times and retired in 2005. He voted against impeaching Bill Clinton and was one of six Republicans to oppose authorising the Iraq War. He died in Corning in March 2020 at 93.
How we estimate it
We publish the CelebrityNetWorth figure dated 3 November 2026 and treat it as an estate value at the time of death. It is not adjusted for inflation to the present, so it understates what the same holdings would be worth today.
Much of the fortune was held in Corning shares whose price moved with the company’s fortunes in optical fiber and display glass.
